Abstract

An eleven year old male Kathiawarihorse carcass was brought for post mortem examination to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, Madras Veterinary College, Chennai with a history of swollen testes and creamy white discharge from the testes for the past four days for which it was treated. External examination revealed an open longitudinal irregularly oval (5x6cm) necrotic wound along the lateral side of the scrotum exposing the tunica vaginalis. On necropsy, peritoneal cavity was found to contain about one litre of dark yellow turbid fluid. Right side of the scrotum revealed abscess and the underlying fascia was highly necrotic with adhesions and contained amorphous white granular substance. Left side of the scrotal pouch showed abscess with about 150ml of thick creamy pus. Testicular parenchyma was shrunken in both the testicles. Histopathology revealed multifocal suppurative foci consisting of numerous degenerated to necrotic neutrophils, cell debris with fibrin surrounded by mononuclear cell infiltration and multinucleated giant cells in the tunica vaginalis of the testis. Some of the areas contained bacterial colonies in the necrosed tissue. Intertubular fibrosis with mild multifocal mononuclear cell infiltration was present. Seminiferous tubular epithelial cells revealed degeneration and necrosis. Staphylococcus spp. was isolated from the tunica vaginalis swab. The case was diagnosed as fatal peritonitis caused by Staphylococcus spp.
