Abstract Pigeon pox is an infectious and contagious disease of pigeon caused by a pox virus. The injured wild pigeon was brought to the TVCC, showing clinical symptoms such as illness, diarrhoea and emaciation with scabs at the base of beak, eyelids, head, wings and legs. The bird succumbed and a detailed necropsy was performed. Cutaneous lesions were collected for histopathology and molecular diagnosis. Microscopically hyperkeratosis along with the presence of intracytoplasmic eosinophilic inclusion bodies in the epidermal layer was observed. Pigeon pox virus was confirmed by PCR amplification of (P4b gene). The pox virus was isolated by inoculating in embryonated eggs. Phylogenetic analysis of P4b gene groupedthe present isolate (Pigeon Pox Virus/India/Nagpur/2018) with the other pigeon pox virus of India, South Korea and European countries. The isolate had 99% homology with the pigeon pox virus and fowl pox virus circulating in India.
