Pathology of vegetative valvular endocarditis associated with β-haemolytic Streptococci in pigs

Abstract

One adult and one two-months old crossbred female pig carcasses were submitted to the post mortem facility, division of pathology, ICAR-IVRI, Izatnagar, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh for diagnosis. The postmortem examination revealed presence of vegetative masses in the mitral and aortic valves of young piglet and in tricuspid valve of adult pig. Bacteriological examination of heart blood revealed presence of β-hemolytic Streptococci. Histopathologically, pulmonary oedema, bronchopneumonia, myocardial necrosis, vegetative endocarditis, hepatocellular necrosis, nephritis, lymphoid depletion, ischemic necrosis of neurons etc. were observed.
