Pathological changes in experimentally induced arsenic toxicity in mice and its amelioration with Aegle marmelos

Abstract

The present investigation was conducted to study the sub-acute toxicity of sodium arsenite in mice and its amelioration with the fruit of Aegle marmelos. A total of 60 BALB/c mice were randomly divided into 5 groups’ viz. Group I (control), II (vehicle), III (treatment group administered with sodium arsenite @3 mg/Kg body weight, orally for 28 days), IV (administered daily with ethanolic extract of Bael fruit @200 mg/Kg body weight, orally) , and V (administered daily sodium arsenite @3 mg/Kg body weight and ethanolic extract of Bael fruit @200 mg/Kg body weight by oral intubation for 28 days). On 29th day, all the mice were sacrificed and thorough post mortem examination was conducted to observe the gross and histopathological changes. Gross changes observed in the arsenic treated group were severe congestion, haemorrhages, oedema and necrosis of various visceral organs, atrophy of kidney and testes. The histopathological changes observed were necrosis of hepatocytes, necrosis of tubules in kidney, infiltration of leukocytes and haemorrhages in liver and kidney, necrosis and depletion of white pulp in spleen; oedema, haemorrhages, and infiltration of leucocytes in lungs; necrosis, and damage of villi in intestine, and necrosis and haemorrhages in testes. The arsenic plus Aegle marmelos treated group revealed similar but mild changes in these organs. It is concluded that administration of Aeglemarmeloshas reduced the toxic effects of sodium arsenite on different organs to a satisfactory level.
