Abstract

Mesotheliomas are rare neoplasms that arise from the mesothelial cells forming the serosal membranes of body cavities. The present case report represents 9 years old male Labrador retriever brought to Small Animal Multispecialty Hospital, GADVASU, Ludhiana, Punjab with a history of abdominal distension and diffcult breathing. Hematological examination revealed relative neutrophilia and serum chemistry showed an increased ALT and GGT. Hepatomegaly was observed through X-ray around the chest area and ultrasonography showed irregular and hyperechoic liver with rounded margins suggestive of chronic hepatic disease tentatively. On cytology, the peritoneal fluid revealed the presence of numerous mesothelial cells in groups. These cells were enlarged and multinucleated with cytoplasmic vacuoles. On the basis of clinical examination, X-ray, USG and cytological findings, the given case was suggestive of mesothelioma.
