Abstract

The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of zinc supplementation on post partum involution status of cervix and uterus and largest ovarian follicular size in Karan Fries cows. Eighteen pregnant Karan Fries cows were selected and divided into three groups as control (C), treatment 1 (T1) and treatment 2 (T2) on the basis of expected producing ability, parity and body weight. Control group was fed basal ration alone while T1 and T2 group were supplemented with 80 and 120 ppm Zinc respectively, along with basal ration. Zinc was supplemented daily from 45 days before calving and continued up to 45 days after calving. Involution status of cervix and uterus and size of dominant follicle were assessed through ultrasonography starting from 7th day of postpartum at weekly interval. Involution rate was significantly (P≤0.05) rapid in Zinc supplemented groups as compared to control. Size of largest ovarian follicle (14.66 ± 0.66, 14.5± 0.56, 12.16 ± 0.60 mm) was significantly (P<0.05) higher in supplemented groups compared to control. Zinc supplementation has a definate role to play in uterine involution and ovarian follicular size in post-partum cows.
