Abstract

Smallholder farmers which dominate the landscape of developing world need to improve farming through acquiring appropriate knowledge and information. Participatory video is just one among the tools that are used for disseminating agricultural information. The use of participatory videos has been seen as catalyst to effective agricultural information transfer to rural areas of the developing world. However, the use of participatory videos in dissemination of agricultural information to farmers only started to take root in developing countries few years ago thus necessitating for studies to establish its applicability as an extension method for transfer of technology. This study was undertaken for assessing the attitude of the farmers towards the participatory video. The study was undertaken in two states, Telangana and Madhya Pradesh. An ex-post facto research design was used for collecting the data from 80 farmers of the Digital Green adopted village. Data were collected through structured questionnaire to measure the attitude of the farmers on five-point continuum statements, which was further analyzed with socio-economic variables. SWOT analysis of the participatory video was also done to reveal the strength, weakness, opportunity and threats of participatory video as an extension method. It was observed that 62.5 per cent of the farmers had favorable attitude towards participatory videos and were influenced by the independent variables i.e., age of the respondents, education level and annual income of the respondents. It was also observed that participatory videos had numerous strengths like it encourages innovation and trust among farmers, and can be used as an extension tool. There is need to assimilate participatory video to compliment and supplement the existing agricultural extension approaches to reach more farmers beyond the study area and encourage horizontal form of information sharing.
