Abstract

Social change denotes change in social relationships, structure, processes and values in society. It implies a shift from the traditional religion oriented, authoritarian and hierarchical society to an egalitarian, secular society. The factors that may influence social change may be psychological, social and economic. Traditional remarriage in India was considered as a neglected issue and women were not allowed to remarry after the sudden death of her spouse. But the trend is changing in contemporary context and more widows are willing to get remarried and the most welcoming aspect is that more young men are willing to accept widows. In the present paper an attempt is made to study the changes that took place in the society regarding widow remarriage. The aim of the study is to analyze the impact of widow remarriage and its consequences in the society and to find out the changes it brought as a new dimension of social change in India.
