Abstract

The Internet has brought in rapid changes in the form of communication. The emergence of Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram and Snapchat and many others has transformed the communication landscape. The emergence of newer varieties of mobile phones has enabled that social media is accessible and affordable across the population. There are both positive and negative views regarding social media. Research has shown that social media has permeated all aspects of human life. In specific ways, it is an extension and modification of traditional communication. Social media has not only become "sites of information" but "sites of action": information-sharing platforms and conduits of direct communication. In order to further understand the usefulness and adaptability of the medium, it is necessary to ascertain the perception regarding the same. This paper seeks to analyse the perceptions regarding social media usage of other media. These perceptions could well be crucial to understanding the use of social media because behaviour arguably reflects underlying understandings of the media as technological platforms of communication (Orlikowski & Gash 1994). The perception of people regarding the effect of social media on aspects of social, political and economic aspects has been examined.
