Abstract The study was carried out to determine the economic prospect of awara (soybean curd) processing among rural women in Kano State Nigeria, through profitability analysis. A multi stage sampling technique was used from which three local government areas were purposively selected based on the prevalence of awara processing in the study area and 184 processors were randomly selected. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, net processing income and other financial ratios. The results showed that average age of processors in the study area was 29.82 years, mean household size was 8 individuals and mean years of experience was 13.22 years. The results of costs and return showed that the total cost of processing 1Kg of soybean grains into soybean curd was N353.42 and the revenue was N460.00 which gave net processing income of N106.58, indicating that soybean curd processing was profitable. The return per naira invested was 1.30. Problems associated with soybean curd processing include inadequate fund, storage of left over, and traditional processing methods. Based on the findings it is concluded that soybean curd processing business help to reduce the level of poverty among the small scale rural women. It is recommended that soybean curd processors should attend workshop trainings on small scale soybean grains processing organized by government or private organizations to learn how to improve their curd processing business efficiently; and how to minimize costs to maximize profit.
