Abstract

Though the incidence and mortality of deep neck infections has markedly decreased with advent of antibiotics and improved dental care, these infections are not unusual and present a challenging problem because of the complex anatomy and potentially fatal complications that may occur. This case report illustrates the development of lateral pharyngeal space abscess following extraction of a lower third molar and the importance of early diagnosis and proper treatment. It was concluded that the management of a lateral pharyngeal space infection of odontogenic origin must be prompt and accurate, with surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy.
