Abstract Background: Herbal medicines have been used since the dawn of the history. In India ayurvedic medicine was much into practice, with a minimal or nil amount of adverse effect. The present split mouth study aimed to evaluate the patient's pain experiences during nonsurgical treatment of periodontitis, using a test gel (Acmella oleracea) and comparing to a control placebo gel used as an adjuct to scaling and root planing. Methods: This split mouth study was conducted in 20 patients, undergoing nonsurgical periodontal therapy (scaling and root planning SRP). Data collected included a full mouth periodontal status, plaque and calculus index. Patient pain perception was assessed with self marked pain scale (VRS & VAS) during scaling and root planing procedure Results: The sites where SRP was done with test gel application as an adjunct showed a reduction in the pain perception when compared with the pain perception of the site with SRP done along with the control placebo gel as an adjunct. Conclusions: From these results, it is evident that test gel containing Acmella oleracea was effective in reducing pain perception of the patient when compared with the control placebo gel used as an adjunct to SRP.
