Abstract

This study was conducted to evaluate the bond strength of a resin composite on dentin after rinsing of etchant with tap water, warm water, distilled water, mineral water and saline.

40 extracted caries free molars were selected, embedded in acrylic resin, horizontally sectioned to achieve flat dentin surface, etched with 35% phosphoric acid for 15 seconds and divided into 5 groups.

Group I-was rinsed for 15 seconds with tap water,

Group II-was rinsed for 15 seconds with warm tap water,

Group III-was rinsed for 15 seconds with distilled water,

Group IV-was rinsed for 15 seconds with mineral water

Group V-was rinsed for 15 seconds with saline.

The samples were blot dried. Bonding agent (single Bond-3M) was applied and cured for 20 seconds. Templates of 3mm diameter and 4mm height were used to restore the prepared surface with composite resin (p-60). The specimen were then incubated at 37 degree Celsius for 24 hours and then subjected to shear bond strength using universal testing machine.

Group III showed higher bond strength, Group I, Group III and Group IV showed no significant difference. Group II and Group V showed reduced bond strength when compared with other groups.
