Identification of Sources of Resistance in Wheat Against Stem Rust

Abstract

Promising wheat genotypes from National Initial Varietal Trial (NIVT-IV) were evaluated for their resistance to stem rust at seedling stage in glasshouse and at adult plant stage in artificially epiphytotic condition in field, during year 2005–2006 and 2006–2007. Genotypes HI 8672, HI 8673, WHD 940, RKD 143, NIDW 478, NIDW 505 and PDW 309 and genotypes WHD 941, UPD 84, PDW 312, DDW 12, AKDW 4156, UAS 420, NIDW 446, NIDW 512 and MACS 3678 were resistant to all the tested 32 and 16 pathotypes at seedling stage. At adult plant stage not a single genotype has shown resistant reaction during the year 20052006, while HI 8673, HI 8683 and DDW - 13 genotypes have shown moderately susceptible reaction during the year 2006–2007. Study indicated that GW 1231 and DDW 13 genotypes showing appreciable resistance can be further utilized for resistance breeding programme.
