Department of Veterinary Parasitology, College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, G.B.Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar-263 145, India Abstract Evaluation of anticoccidial efficacy of combination of sulphadiazene and trimethoprim, (Biotrim Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd., India) at different concentrations of 1ml L−1, 1ml 2L−1 and 1ml 4L−1 of drinking water for 10 consecutive days was assessed in 3 week-old broiler chicks experimentally infected with 5 x 104 sporulated oocysts of field isolates of mixed Eimeria spp. The medication commenced at 96h post-infection. Prophylactic activity (medication commencing 24h before infection) of the oral drug suspension was also evaluated at concentration of 1ml 4L−1 of drinking water for 15 days. Various parameters viz., mortality, lesion score, percent weight gain, feed conversion ratio, oocyst index, global index and percent reduction in oocyst count were recorded. The drug in reference at concentration of 1ml L−1 and 1ml 2L−1 of drinking water for 10 days was able to check the mortality and partially reduced lesion scores as well as oocyst counts. The global index was 78.2, 56.6 and 33.7 in birds given Biotrim oral suspension at the rate of 1ml L−1, 1ml 2−1 and 1ml 4L−1 of drinking water, respectively. The drug was found to have a better efficacy against coccidiosis at concentration of 1ml L−1 of drinking water for 10 days after the onset of clinical signs when compared to other doses.
