Abstract

A case of babesiosis in a domestic cat with its successful treatment is reported. The disease was characterized by emaciation, letharginess, body temperature (100.4°F), rapid and increased heartbeat and tachypnoea; normal TLC (5370 per mm3), absolute neutrophil count (4350 per mm3), lymphopenia (752 per mm3) and small amoeboid, oval or rounded parasites of varying sizes in erythrocytes resembling Babesia felis. Electrocardiogram revealed sinus tachycardia. Recovery was uneventful with primaquine phosphate @ 0.5 mg kg−1 body weight orally repeated once after seven days and cyproheptadine.
