Abstract

The extent of biological damage induced by methylmethane sulphonate (MMS) in M1 generation and induced variability for quantitative traits, viz; plant height, fertile branches per plant, pods per plant and total plant yield studied in M2 generation revealed that MMS inhibits germination at higher concentrations and is capable of inducing a high degree of pollen sterility as well as a wide range of micromutations in green gram (Vlgna radiata (L.) Wilczek). The induced biological damage was observed to be dose dependent. Both positive and nagatlve shifts in mean values and higher coefficients of variability and heritability values for quantitative traits indicate the possibility of evolving high yielding mutants through proper selection in this crop particularly with low and moderate concentrations of MMS.
