An empirical study on multi-criteria approach to mutual funds selection

Abstract

Indian financial scene presents a plethora of avenues to the investors. Some options are risk-averse which are being selected by those people who think of safety and then quantum of return and for those who want to take risk, stock market is the available, but some people are not adept at understanding the stock market, the task of generating superior returns at similar levels of risk is arduous to say the least. For them Mutual Funds is the best option. Mutual Funds are essential investment vehicles where people with similar investment objective come together to pool their money and then invest accordingly. The investors do not evaluate all possible mutual fund characteristics while selecting a mutual fund. This study aims at tracking investor's preferences and priorities towards different types of mutual fund schemes for identifying key features of a mutual fund. Taking a lead from this, this paper attempts to find out various motivating factors determining the choice of the investors for selecting mutual funds specifically relating to Mutual Fund Characteristics. On the above pretext, primary data has been collected through questionnaire and hypothesis has been formulated and tested by using Factor analysis. The study highlighted the important Mutual Fund Characteristics are Core Fund Values, Portfolio Performance and Reputation of Mutual Funds. The findings of this paper will certainly help in better designing of marketing and management strategies by the asset management companies offering mutual funds.
