Abstract

Performance Appraisal (PA) is one of the Human Resource Development sub-systems/processes which provides, an impartial rating of an employee's excellence in his present job and to his potentialities for a better job. It is helpful in evaluating processes and future plans of organisation including determining of employee's development. It has general objectives, viz., providing feedback, facilitating promotions/lay-off decisions, encouraging performance improvement, motivating superior performance, setting and measuring goals, counselling poor performers, determining compensation changes, encouraging coaching and mentoring, supporting manpower planning, determining individual/organizational training and development needs and improving overall organizational performance. This paper based on empirical study, using statistical tests viz. NPar test, Chi-Square test, Analysis of Variance and using primary data, suggests that steps/suggestions for further improvements in existing PA system may be adopted based on recommendations for individuals and the laboratory.
