Abstract People undoubtedly constitute the most valuable asset in any enterprise, be it public or private. Until we acknowledge the fact that an expert in any particular job is most often the person performing it, man, as one of the 5Ms of factors of production (the others being: machines, materials, money and management of time) plays the role of a hub, without which the organisation cannot function effectively. Faced with rapid change that pervades business environment, organisations need to develop a more focused, dynamic and coherent approach to managing its human resources. Managing the human capital of any enterprise requires a complex and effective utilisation of both human and material resources. The process of power sector reform in Odisha started in November 1993, under the initiatives of the World Bank, to improve the operational efficacy. Human capital – the productive capacity that is embedded in people – is one of the most important contributors to the growth in the nations’ output and standard of living. The present research attempts to study the role of human capital in building performance excellence of the Odisha power sector. This paper aims on human capital, which is the most valuable intangible asset, and how it affects an organisations’ productivity.
