Abstract

This descriptive research work has been undertaken as a comparative study to identify and to differentiate the occupational hazards of medical laboratory technicians working in private hospitals and private diagnostic centres in Tirunelveli city, Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 200 medical laboratory technicians (100 from private hospitals and 100 from private diagnostic centres) have been sampled using the judgement sampling technique after stratified the subject into medical laboratory technicians working in private multispeciality hospitals and diagnostic centres using stratified random sampling. Sources of occupational hazards have been identified and differentiated under nine dimensions, namely organisation structure and policy, ergonomics, fear and safety, resources, workload and work shift, environment and hygiene, interruption, patient and communication, and training-related factors. The primary data have been collected using the questionnaire method. The secondary data have been collected from books, journals and websites. Weighted average, mean, standard deviation and coefficient of variation test have been administered to analyse the data. The analysis of the study also shows that all factors of occupational hazards are perceived at the medium level by the majority of the respondents working in both kinds of organisations. The study has given suitable suggestions to prevent and control the factors related to occupational hazards of medical laboratory technicians.
