Abstract India has been witnessing a blinding pace of growth and development in recent times. There is talk of the country leapfrogging into the league of developed nations sooner than later. Over the past two decades, there has been an increasing awareness of the potential damages that climate change, air and water pollution and inadequate natural resources management could induce upon human health, natural ecosystems and the economy. To address these concerns, considerable emphasis has been placed on sustainable development by many countries and international organisations. Accordingly, sustainable agricultural development has become a major issue of the twenty-first century. Agriculture is today a key industry worldwide, as it is estimated that one out of nearly every three people is engaged in farming and agriculture, which provide practically all of the cereals, vegetables, meat, fish and forestry products that we depend upon. Consequently, farmers must make a most efficient use of all natural resources, in particular of soil, water and air, in generating these vital products. The socio-economic implications of both climate and non-climate impacts on water supply and demand will depend in large part on both the ability to adapt to change and on whether water managers and planners take action. This paper attempts to tackle and explore the issue of sustainable development in agriculture in India. Top Keywords Sustainable, Agriculture, Growth, Development, Management, Resources, Impact. Top |
