Career progression, one of the most important components of the working environment, is often considered complementary to employee development. It is concerned with providing a career path to employees in the organization based on the assessment of organizational needs, employee's capabilities, and choices.

Researchers must recognize that the primary responsibility for managing and pursuing their careers is theirs. As such the individual researcher should identify training needs and actively seek out opportunities for learning and development in order to further their career and take personal responsibility for their choices. Researchers must ensure that their career development requirements and activities are regularly discussed, monitored and evaluated throughout the year. They need to commit themselves fully to all such activities. Researchers should therefore take active control of this process by setting and regularly reviewing long and short term goals for career progression and by seeking out training and career guidance.

An important element of research work is to ensure that this is exploited and transferred for the benefit of their institutions and the community, and researchers are reminded of their responsibility to conduct and disseminate research results in an honest and ethical manner and to contribute to the wider body of knowledge. It is also important that researchers recognize that not everyone undertaking research will secure a long term career. In this regard researchers must develop skills that not only help within the academic environment but are also useful in other ways and help increase flexibility and the chance of careers in other areas.

Teaching and Research go hand in hand. Universities are economic as well as academic engines. Studies show that straights that enhance and expand University research, experience and increase in industrial development. Therefore, researchers should understand that investment in research and publications creates jobs, solves real world problems and ultimately create a stronger learning environment.
