Drilling and Blasting of Tunnels in Himalayan Geology Venkatesh H.S., Balachander R., Gopinath G. National Institute of Rock Mechanics, Bangalore Online published on 18 January, 2018. Abstract Though blasting has been the most preferred means of rock removal/mineral exploitation it is the most blamed activity. It is a known fact that blasting creates environmental problems in the form of ground vibration, air overpressure and flyrock. In case of tunnels, caverns, canals and other civil construction sites even damage to rock mass due to blasting is of concern. It has been observed that with the adoption of proper blast designs, good implementation and use of technology many of these adverse impacts have been controlled. This paper deals in depth the selection of drill machines, blasthole diameter, explosives, initiation systems and blast design for excavating tunnels in Himalayan geology. Experiences at some of the major projects and problems encountered with the solutions envisaged are presented. Top | |
