Abstract

The underground stations of Delhi Metro Line-2 and Line-6 are having 8-car and 6-car train confi guration respectively. The typical length of the station box for 8-car and 6-car train confi guration is normally 310 meter and 265 meter respectively. The under construction Line-7 and Line-8 of Phase-III of Delhi MRTS, which are likely to be commissioned in the year 2018, are also designed for 6-car train confi guration with station box length of approximately 265 meters.

During construction of Phase-III, an optimization initiative was taken at Ashram underground station of Line-7, where the station box was originally planned with 266 meter length and with a depth of 20.7 meter. In view of the problem faced in the acquisition of the land the station box was redesigned and constructed within the length of 151 meter and with the same depth of 20.7 meter after creating a mezzanine level in the station box.

The proposed Phase-IV network of Delhi Metro is of 106 km which has underground network of 37 km with 28 underground stations. The alignment of proposed Phase-IV is passing through densely populated area where fi nding land for the construction of underground station will be a daunting task. It is also planned to have 9-car confi guration for the Phase-IV metro stations, therefore, if going with the present practices the station box of about 330 meter will be required to accommodate all the systems.

The successful optimization done at Ashram UG station paved the way for Delhi Metro to undertake a study to optimize the size of the station box for the proposed Phase-IV. The systems are redesigned after studying the different practices adopted by other metros around the world and cost and energy effective optimization schemes has been developed for the future upcoming underground stations of Phase-IV. The proposed station box shall have the length of approximately 250 meter for the 9-car confi guration. In general it is concluded that an underground station can be built with the total length of platform plus 25–30 meter of space either side of platform for the ancillary rooms.
