Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the readiness of Undergraduate students for the use of online chat for collaborative learning. A questionnaire titled: Students’ Readiness for use of Online Chat (SROC), was used to collect data from four hundred (400) students from the department of Education Science, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. It was divided into three sections A, B and C. Simple percentages and Chi Square were used to analyze the data. The study revealed that there was no significant difference in the technology competencies possessed by male and female undergraduate students; and in the number of hours they spend on online chat. Some recommendations put forward include: 1. that the Government and stake holders of education should join hands together in the provision of technology facilities in the Universities and 2. Internet workshops should be organized for students especially the females to help them develop the competencies needed for online chat.
