Abstract Cooperative learning is an innovative concept of learning in which focal point is the student. In this type of instructional strategy, students are clubbed in small groups. So in a group there are lower achievers, higher achievers and physically disabled students. The underlying principle behind the concept of cooperative learning is that when the students of different cognitive, intellectual and physical levels are exposed to solve a given task, they interact and work together as a team in accomplishing to all the group members as it improves learning attitudes, interpersonal skills and self concept. It also decreases dependence on the teachers. In cooperative learning, the teacher remains in the background and becomes a guide, facilitator, illuminator or torch bearer. To have an effective cooperative learning the role of teacher is very important in organizing classrooms, group-size, organizing various classroom activities, giving suggestions, appraisal or motivation where required. Cooperative learning succeeded in discovering the idea of not only pouring the knowledge in the minds of the students but providing the students such opportunities so that they can realize, retain, experience and utilize it in their real life situations, which is the need of the hour. Cooperative learning is a means of enhancing the cognitive capacity of the students. Cooperative learning is not only limited to academic proficiency but it also inculcating social skills like cooperation, team work, leadership integrity and division of labour. It also enhances the personal development of the students. The keynote of cooperative learning is that the combined knowledge and manpower foster higher academic achievement and social interaction among students improves communication skills that become a necessity or demand to function in a society.
