Abstract

Technology helps people learn, be creative, and become players and communicators in a global village. In an era of limited resources across educational sectors, teachers and researchers are under increasing pressure to find innovative ways to support their teaching and research activities. There is growing evidence that technological application to education can accelerate and improve learning on a number of fronts. It can also provide the means of gathering, connecting and analyzing data about teaching and learning in ways that enable us to more accurately diagnose student need and evaluate programs. Being on the Internet allows students of all ages to engage in knowledge building on a worldwide stage. The application of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) is already changing the Organization and delivery of higher education. The factors that have driven the higher learning institutions to adopt and incorporate ICTs in teaching and learning include greater information access; greater communication; synchronous and asynchronous learning; increased cooperation and collaboration, cost-effectiveness and pedagogical improvement. However, ICTs have not permeated to a great extent in many higher learning institutions in most developing countries due to many socio-economic and technological Circumstances. This paper discusses new learning and training technologies considering their pedagogical, cost and technical implications. It also discusses challenges for integrating these technologies in higher learning institutions and giving best practice approaches for addressing each of the challenges. “A child entering the new century will likely face more risks and uncertainties and will need to gain more knowledge and master more skills than any generation before.” (Schaeffer, Dykstra, Irvine, Pigozzi, & Torres 2000).
