Case Study of Person with Body Dysmorphic Disorder

Abstract

This article presents a case study of client with Body dysmorphic disorder. Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is characterized by obsessive preoccupation with an imaginary or trivial physical anomaly that is perceived as a severe flaw to one's appearance that cannot be seen by others, on the other hand patient may feel embarrassed, anxious, ashamed, that patient may avoid social situations. Patients with this disorder causes clinically significant stress, impairment, and dysfunction. Body dysmorphic disorder is often misdiagnosed, so recognition and treatment are important because this disorder can lead to disability, depression, and suicide. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy helped him to overcome his self-destructive thoughts, this helped him to alleviate anxiety, depression, and shame. After 4 weeks of treatment and CBT his thought about worthless feeling, irrational thoughts have been reduced. Family intervention, supportive psychotherapy, psycho education, Discharge counselling was conducted. At the end of the therapy, the client and family knowledge about the illness and coping skills has improved.
