Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Program on Management of Sibling Rivalry among Mothers of Under Five Children in Selected Area at Salem

Abstract

3 children in 100 are dangerously violent towards their brothers or sisters due to their parental attitude and treatment and lack of knowledge on sibling rivalry and its management. This study is aimed to assess the effectiveness of structured teaching program on management of sibling rivalry among the mothers of under five children. Method: A Quantitative, evaluative approach and one group pre- test –post- test, pre-experimental research design were used. A sample of 30 subjects were selected from periakollapatty, by non- probability, convenient sampling technique.Conceptual frame work, Peplau's interpersonal relationship theory was used in this study. The tools used in this study are structured interview questionnaire to assess the knowledge and the checklist to assess the attitude on management of sibling rivalry. Pre- test was conducted to assess the level of knowledge and attitude on sibling rivalry and its management and after administering the structured teaching program regarding sibling rivalry and its management and distributed pamphlets following that post test was conducted to assess the improvement in knowledge and attitude on sibling rivalry and its management. Findings: The finding showed that the mean pre test knowledge score 57.5% has been improved to 82.5% at post test and the mean pre test attitude score 52% has been improved to 84.6% at post test. There was no significant association between mean pre-test knowledge level and their selected demographic variables (birth order of the mother and Educational status of the mother).Conclusion:The structured teaching program on sibling rivalry and its management was significantly effective to improve the knowledge and attitude on sibling rivalry and its management among the mothers of under five children.
