Learning Style Preferences Among Nursing Students in A Selected College, Chennai

Abstract

The teaching profession has been continually challenged to provide evidence of the effectiveness of teaching and learning methods. Learning styles are considered as an influencing factor on the learners ’educational performance. It is important to identify learners ’learning styles for leading teaching and learning activities, because it can help teachers to teach and treat their students with respect to the students ’characteristics and it can make learning more effective.

Objectives

1. To assess the learning style preferences among nursing students.

2. To associate the learning style preferences with the selected demographic variables.

Method

A Descriptive design was chosen for the study. Samples of 30 students from B. Sc. Nursing II & III year were selected for the study by purposive sampling method. The Grasha-Riechmann student learning style scale, consist of sixty items was used for this study. Statistical Analysis of data was done using descriptive Statistical methods like Frequency, Percentage, Mean and Inferential Statistical methods like Chi-square.

Results

73% of the students were in the age group of 18–19 yrs., 80% students were female 55% of the students were day scholar, 60% of the students medium of instruction in +2 was Tamil medium, 47% of the students spent less than one hour per day for study, 44% of students reported that they understand and study the course content, 37% of the reported that they study only prescribed books. The study findings reveals that the highest mean score of 36.43 for collaborative learning style and lowest mean score of 24.3 for independent learning style. There was no association between the learning style and selected demographic variables.

Conclusion

The study concludes that collaborative learning style is preferred by nursing students. The awareness and understanding of individual differences is of great importance in tailoring each learning style to benefit educators and learners, thereby enhancing nursing education.
