Effectiveness of Massage on Level of Pain Perception During First Stage of Labour Among The Primi Parturient Mothers

Abstract

A Quantitative approach, pre-experimental one group pre test post test design was chosen to assess the effectiveness of massage on level of pain perception during first stage labour among primi parturient mothers. The study was conducted at Vadapalani Health centre. The sample comprises of 30 primi parturient mothers. The samples were selected by convenient sampling technique. The pre test level of labour pain was assessed by using the numerical pain scale at 4cm cervical dilatation. Followed by, the mother was positioned on left lateral and using hands massage with effleurage, petrissage and friction stroke techniques to the back for hourly 15min(5 minutes each technique) till the cervical dilatation reached 7 cm dilatation. After that, the post test level of labour pain was assessed by using numerical pain scale. The study showed a significant difference in the level of pain perception during the first stage of labour before and after the massage. So, the study concluded that, the massage was found very effective in reduction of pain perception during labour.
