Abstract

A disaster is a serious disruption of the functioning of a community or a society that causes widespread human, material, economic and environmental losses. These losses generally surpass the ability of the affected community or society. The situation of disaster is called hazardous because it poses potential threat to human life, property or activity. Vulnerability represents the state of the conditions determined by physical, social, economic and environmental factors or processes which increase the susceptibility of a community to the impact of hazard. Disasters can be classified on the basis of nature of origin as natural or manmade disasters. The extremity in disasters is being exhibited of late due to environmental degradation leading to climate change which is turn refers to any decrease or increase in the temperature of the earth. The poor are more vulnerable towards possible impact of environmental degradation and pay disproportionately greater price. Natural calamities are aggravated and augmented by irresponsible human activity. While many parts of India suffer from acute shortage of water, drought and famine, India is also one of the most flood prone areas of the world. Around 250 million people in India live in areas that may be affected by floods in any one year. Due to geological conditions India is highly vulnerable to natural and other disasters. Present paper suggests some concrete suggestions to reduce human, financial and economic loss during disaster.
