Abstract

India has a great number of population and little less than half is create women percentage among all. From later Vedic period position of women is declining in the Indian society. Women have not actively participated in their emancipation due to their lack of economic independence and illiteracy. There is a need to address the issue by raising the status of women. The key lies in women empowerment through economic self-sufficiency and higher awareness levels on social, political and legal issues through mobilization. Women should be organized and strengthened at the grass root level to end their subordination. The main aim of this programme is to enhance the quality of life of women through increased knowledge and skills. Though in their public utterances, men praise the concept of equality and show concern that women should be able to avail of their constitutional and legal rights, yet at heart they are the most conservative. The judiciary is not sympathetic to the women‟s cause. She has to undergo sex determination test to know the gender of the child. Present paper focuses that the Government of India has learned more from poor conditions of women in India and it continuously exercises for the empowerment of women due to their social, political and economic backwardness. Undoubtedly the British Government in India, had made some legal provisions for the development of women but they could not prove enough. That is why women got very good status in the constitution. In the period of 65 years the government was always determine for the development and empowerment for women.
