A national security strategy need of an emerging power Srivastava Rohit Abstract As India sheds its Nehruvian pacifist security policy, the world is witnessing the emergence of a nation unafraid of the challenges it may encounter on disturbing the détente with its adversaries. Although New Delhi had not retaliated against Pakistan after the 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2008, when over 150 lives were lost, it planned and executed multiple crossborder special forces operations in Pakistan occupied Kashmir to avenge the death of 18 soldiers in 2016. Again in February 2019, India launched an airstrike on a terror camp deep inside Pakistani territory leading to an air skirmish between the two nuclear-armed nations. The airstrike exposed Islamabad’s nuclear bluff Prime Minister Narendra Modi seems to have a well thought out strategy and the government is preparing a comprehensive policy document called the National Security Strategy to overcome India’s multifaceted security challenges.
