Abstract

The inter-turn short circuit fault in rotor windings is the defect that commonly occurs in synchronous generators and hence need to be remedied. For this, a significant number of approaches have been developed for detecting such faults, some are online and some are offline. However, online approaches like coil approach, excitation current method, and virtual power method have received much attention in recent times due to the advancement in technology. Although these systems provided good results but they were complex and time-consuming. In this paper, a unique method that is based on fuzzy logic interference is developed for detecting faults in hydro generators automatically. The main motive of using the FIS in the proposed system is to reduce the human effort and improve the accuracy of detection by making the decisions automatically. In addition to this, another important parameter i.e. temperature has been analysed along with the voltage and current to increase the efficacy of the system. Furthermore, in order to detect and identify faults in hydro-generator in a cost-effective manner, a GUI is developed. In the end, the performance of the proposed fuzzy based detection model is analysed in the MATLAB software in terms of various dependency factors.
