Measurement of inequaility and poverty in India Dr. Kumar Naresh Assistant Prof., Department of Economics, Dr. B.R. Ambedker Government College, Kaithal (India) Online published on 8 April, 2014. Abstract The present study evaluates the impact of the MNREGA and the SGSY on rural poverty in India. The measurement of poverty is the most important problem to be addressed first in understanding the problem of poverty. Therefore, poverty and inequality have been measured among the MNREGA and the SGSY beneficiaries in India. These programmes have now emerged as most important tools for rural development and poverty eradication. However, these programmes are not fully successful in achieving their objectives. To eradicate poverty, it is essential to create employment opportunities in the rural areas. The findings of our analysis show that a large proportion of the beneficiaries have been living below the poverty line and the successes of these programmes depend upon the effective implementation of the schemes.
