The strategies and expectations of apparel exporters in Tirupur, India

Abstract

The export performance of readymade garments witnessed growth till 2006 and Tirupur has accomplished the position of hub for the apparel industry in India. The collapse of American economy drastically affected the hosiery industry located in Tirupur. The textile exporters got affected and unable to retrieve from the huge loss. The aim of this research is to identify the short-term and long-term strategies of apparel exporters in Tirupur for overcoming the challenges posed by the global recession and also to find out the kind of support they are expecting from various stakeholders. The respondents were the apparel exporters in Tirupur and the sample size was 600. The Gaerrett's ranking technique has been applied to analyze the data. It is found that the top three short term strategies of Micro exporters are identifying new buyers, employing professionals and taping new markets. Small exporters want to explore new markets in order to increase their exports, identify new buyers and also to employ professionals in their export business. Medium sized exporters chose employing professionals over other strategies. They also prefer to seek new buyers and interestingly they also prefer to shift their attention to premium product exports. Large exporters mulling over to modernize their production process by adopting new technology.
