Abstract

Peace is the foremost of virtues possessed by civilized societies the world over. Educationists have for long emphasized the crucial role played by peace and non-violence in the attainment of growth and stability. It is imperative on the part of policy-makers to carve out a niche for the compulsory inclusion of peace education in the academia. With the opening up of the Indian economy and the entry of philanthropic private players into the education sector, the poverty-stricken have been handed over a golden opportunity to break the shackles of discrimination. Instead of plunging deep into the gutters of crime and amorality, they are successfully delving deeper into the sea of blessed knowledge. This paper dispassionately examines the evolution of educational values down the ages, highlighting the revolutionary transformation attained in the process. Further, it envisions the role of business corporations in rendering free education as a part of their social responsibility which, no doubt, is a stepping stone towards attaining non-exploitative social enlightenment.
