Abstract Private equity and venture capital are playing a vital role in India's economic development. Over the years, PE investors have nourished the breed of entrepreneurs and helped businesses generate significant value. The rapid growth of GDP and liberalisation of the economy helped a lot for the development of venture capital industry in India. The year 2016 witnessed a number of key reforms such as implementation of GST, demonetisation, income hike due to the seventh pay commission and one rank one pension (OROP). The year 2016 witnessed a slight slowdown in private equity (PE) activity, with 13.9 billion USD worth of investments across 971 deals as compared to 15.8 billion USD across 1045 deals in 2015. A lot of variation is also noticed in investment trend during the last five years. This paper makes an attempt to analyse the investment trend of private equity investments in India during 2012–2016.
