Abstract

India is today the world's fastest growing economy. Yet, there is a dearth of private investment by domestic as well as foreign investors. This is closely linked to the inability of banks to finance new investments because they are saddled with a huge amount of non-performing assets (NPA). The financial results of 2015–16 will go down as watershed moment for the Indian banking system, when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) forced banks to bite the bullets and face up to their asset quality issues. This paper is an attempt to analyze the extent of NPA in Indian banking sector.
