Impact of Reforms on Area Production and Yield of Sugarcane in India Dr. Mishra Vivek Kumar Lecturer of Economics, Vivekanand Inter College Atwavaik, Unnao *Former Junior Research Fellow, Department of Economics, University of Allahabad, Allahabad, India Online published on 26 June, 2018. Abstract Present research paper attempts to examine the impact of reforms on the area, production and yield of sugarcane in India. To achieve the objectives of the study secondary data have been analysed with the help of appropriate statistical and econometric tools like one tailed paired sample t test and semi log regression model. The paper reveals that the reform measures have failed to bring any significant improvement in the sugarcane cultivation in terms of area under sugarcane and production of the same. There is significant improvement in the sugarcane yield during the post reform period however; the same cannot be entirely attributed to the measures taken to improve the sugar scenario, as there may be factors other than these, which have favorably impacted the yield. There is lack of attraction in sugarcane farming due to higher cost of production and mounting sugarcane arrears in sugar industry. Measures taken to improve the sugar scenario failed to make sugarcane cultivation a profitable venture leading to unsatisfactory growth in area and production of sugarcane.
