RFID-An Emerging Technology for Cold Chain Sustainability Arora Madhu*, Panda Biranchi Prasad** *Assistant Professor, School of Management, Uttaranchal University, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India **Associate Professor, School of Business, University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India Online published on 26 June, 2018. Abstract This paper introduces the use of RFID technology as an emerging solution for sustainable business practices in cold chain logistics. A cold chain executes its functions under desired controlled atmosphere (CA) conditions in the supply chain. This paper uncovers many scholarly works to study the extent to which RFID technology addresses the sustainability issues-economic, environment and social. The cold chain requirements and capabilities are studied from both research and business literatures to discuss in this paper. Based on the inductive logic, the authors describe how the technology supports a cold chain on sustainable criteria. The discussions attempt to establish the appropriateness and strategic fitness of RFID technology for the cold chains. The findings from the selected cold chain practices show that their coordinated efforts achieve the economic, environmental and social goals. This indicates the scope for RFID technology in a generalized sustainable direction for cold chain operations. The scope is clearly visible and seems applicable entirely over all stages of a cold chain. The paper has a direct implication on the stakeholders by virtue of the potential locked in the recommended technology on a sustainability front.
