Investigating the impact of large class size on teaching speaking skills grade 9 english classes at bikeltu debeso senior secondary school in focus

Abstract

This study focuses on the impact of large class size on teaching of speaking skills. It was to investigate the impact of large class size on teaching English speaking skills in grade 9 at Bikeltu Debeso Senior Secondary school. It was conducted on grade 9 students and teachers at the school. The study involved 150 students from the total of 750 and the 4 English teachers of grade 9. The Students were randomly selected form 10 sections and questionnaire was administered to them. The teachers were taken purposely and interviewed as well as classroom practice observation was carried out. Data of the study were analysed quantitatively and qualitatively. The analysed data were organized in to tables and paragraphs. The study findings revealed that large class size has negative impact on teaching of speaking skills and teacher's speaking skills activities. It leads not to use appropriate methodologies. It is also difficult in management of the classroom interaction of both students with each other's and teacher with student. Therefore, appropriate action should be taken to avoid or reduce the impact of large class size on teaching of speaking skills of the language. This should be done through cooperative efforts of both school administrators and English teachers of the school.
