Abstract

Located in Yazali under Lower Subansiri district of Arunachal Pradesh, Ranganadi Hydro-electric Project Phase-I with a capacity of 405 Mega Watt was built and develop by NEEPCO ltd on the river basin of Panyor (Ranganadi) river during 1990s and was commissioned in the year 2001. Though the project has benefitted the state government and project affected families in terms of revenues, employment, infrastructure development etc. yet downstream impacts of the project have not been taken care of by the concern authorities. It is observed that RHEP-I has not only reduced the magnitude of agricultural and horticultural productivity in the downstream villages but also causes frequent rise in water level, flood and threatens life of people, cattle, fish, environment etc. In this paper an attempt has been made to understand the downstream impact of RHEP Phase-I with a view to develop suggestions to address the problems.
