Abstract The interaction between children and the environment in the light of value instilment is the need of the hour. This paper reviews existing publications that describe the concept of value development in children of age 1–13 years. A broad review of early childhood, middle childhood and early adolescence literature revealed a number of studies describing long term planning of home and school about what values young children must imbibe in the constantly changing world. Practical methods for parents to strengthen children's character are discussed. The article explores the entire climate of the school interweaving values and curriculum. It provides practical ways, guided by deeply insightful value based aims of education, to help the teachers to intrinsically develop positive attitude in children. The article summarizes the ways to build children's internal control and self- discipline. It also inquires into the current need of substantial curriculum change, for sensitizing parents and teachers, of need of transformed value system for the future society. The conclusions indicate valuable implications for the functioning of family and school that fosters humility and develops human values among children from a tender age.
