Abstract Museums preserve the cultural values of a society. A museum plays many functions i.e. creating awareness towards culture and heritage, dissemination of knowledge and bringing a desirable change in the economy of a country. Museum libraries provide support through its resources and services to its parent organizations for fulfillment of its objectives. Although the museum libraries are emergence of modern period when research organizations and cultural institutions were enjoying the developing era, but its presence in ancient times cannot be denied. The paper covers a selective range of research papers, case studies and research work on Museums and its libraries in India. In this review of literature, the ideas are covered through various studies related to museum, museum libraries, purpose and historical growth of Museum Libraries in Delhi, objectives of museum libraries, the importance of museum libraries for its readers, what functions they perform and what are the difficulties in their path.
