Abstract The gas tragedy of Bhopal took place in the midnight of 2nd and 3rd December 1984 was the biggest and one of the worst industrial disaster country and even world has seen so far. The accident happens due to the leakage of MIC (Methyl Isocyanate) gas from pesticide plant of Union carbide leads to thousands of deaths and morbidities and other thousands results in the various chronic diseases and disabilities in the exposed population. Supreme Court of India has declared a compensation of $470 million to be payable by Union Carbide Corporation Limited (UCIL) as compensation to the victims. Various remedial and rehabilitation measures has been adopted by the state government to make the victim families economically independent and bring them back to the mainstream. Over a period of 30 years, various studies has been conducted on the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy but most of them were related to effect of MIC on health of the people. This paper is an attempt to assess the socio-economic status of the affected families due to compensation and rehabilitation measures of state government over a period of 30 years.
