Abstract

Parenting a child with disability is a very difficult task. Previous studies have revealed a strong association between parental distress and caretaking of children with disability. The purpose of this study was to study the significance of difference among mothers based on their age, income, area of residence and job profession in relation to depression. Sixty mothers of differently abled children were recruited from Composite Regional Centre, Bemina, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir through purposive sampling technique. The mean age of the participants was 30.5. Beck's depression inventory (BDI-II) was used to measure the level of depression among these mothers. The results revealed a statistically significant difference between the mothers residing in rural and urban areas of Kashmir on depression (t =-2.35; p <.05). However a statistically insignificant difference were found on age (t=-.27; p >.05), Income (t=-.466; p >.05) and job profession (F= 2.30; p >.05) among these mothers on depression.
