Abstract

The mechanism which ensures safe disposal & recycling are waste management activities & the various types of waste like liquid & solid waste, industrial waste, bio-medical waste & nuclear waste which causes environmental damage if remains untreated. In developing nation like India, waste generation is a giant problem where such practices are given less emphasis due to the failure of waste management. Generally SWM requires making effective arrangement for every process from collection to disposal. The aim behind the study was to explore various models of SWM & figure out the hurdles coming in the path of its sustainability. For this purpose different municipal corporation of Chhattisgarh were visited. Ambikapur was taken as base model various barriers of waste management were studied. Based on observation of common dimensions of all the plants, we have constructed a questionnaire comprising of barriers of SWM & got it filled with the corporations. A structural model developed using ISM technique giving the cause & effect relationship between the barriers which exhibits that Public Unawareness is the root cause of other barriers which can simplify work for decision maker while taking subsequent measures.
